Custom Sports Guards
FAQS
Custom or At-Home Heat Molded Guards?
At Guard Haus, we always recommend a custom sports guard for optimal protection, fit, and performance.
Custom guards are designed specifically to your anatomy, providing a secure fit that allows for better breathing, communication, and consistent impact protection during play.
At-home heat molded (boil-and-bite) guards can be a temporary option, but they often result in bulky fit, uneven thickness, and reduced long-term durability.
When is a custom guard not ideal?
A heat-molded or flexible option may be more appropriate if:
- The athlete is under the age of 12 and still has active tooth development (baby teeth present)
- The athlete has active orthodontic appliances, such as:Braces,Aligner attachments, Herbst or other functional appliances
In these cases, a guard may need to accommodate ongoing tooth movement or hardware changes.
Our Recommendation:
If there are no active changes occurring in the mouth, a custom, non-active appliance is always the best choice to ensure:
- Maximum protection
- Consistent fit
- Long-term durability
How Long Will a Custom Sports Guard Last?
With proper care, a custom sports guard can last multiple seasons while maintaining its fit and protective performance.
To extend the life of your guard, we recommend:
- Avoiding chewing or biting on the guard
- Cleaning regularly (without over-scrubbing or harsh chemicals)
- Storing in a protective case
- Keeping away from extreme heat, cold, and pets
When Should It Be Replaced?
Your guard should be replaced immediately if you notice:
- Cracks or structural damage
- Changes in fit or looseness
- Significant wear from use or chewing
- Any dental changes (new dental work, shifting, orthodontics)

How We Compare
Side Hustle Providers:
Dental assistants , hygienists or sport guard techs offering team-based guards typically range from $55–$90.
Custom? Yes.
But often made without advanced 3D technology or lab-level fabrication. Usually requiring messy, goopy and gag inducing impressions
This can result in:
- Bulkier fit
- Less accuracy
- Inconsistent thickness and protection
Dental Clinics
Some clinics offer 3D scanning, but many still rely on traditional thermoforming methods using EVA materials.
Even when digitally designed, guards are often:
- Pressed using older drop-mold techniques
- Limited in true customization
- Priced between $350–$500
Insurance may apply, but convenience and flexibility are limited.
Online Custom Guards
Old school at-home impression kits are sent to you, then returned for fabrication.
While marketed as “custom,” they rely on:
- Self-taken impressions
- No real-time adjustments
- Traditional EVA materials
Price range: $199–$395
